EXPERIENCE, METHODS, BELIEFS, PROGRAMS, STUDENTS

My Experience

  • I have taught in several private and charter schools in the Tampa Bay Area.

  • I am a FL licensed teacher with an MBA.

  • I believe I have a unique gifting from God in the area of reading instruction.

  • I have been teaching reading professionally for over 10 years; personally for over 20 years.

  • I taught both my girls to read at the age of 3.

  • Their reading was progressing at the same time as their speaking skills based on Montessori principles.

  • I have been successful in teaching children with varied ability levels including struggling, average, advanced, gifted, and special considerations such as ADHD, ADD, and Autism.

My Methods

  • I use a 7 step process for teaching phonetic reading

    1. Learn 5 short vowel sounds and 21 consonant sounds

    2. Learn how to blend each beginning consonant with each vowel

    3. Learn how to read short vowel words

    4. Learn how to read long vowel words

    5. Learn 132 special sounds and 73 phonemes

    6. Learn how to read fluently with expression for punctuation marks

    7. Learn to comprehend and summarize what is read

  • I use time tested  material sets from ABeka, Lakeshore Learning, Hooked on Phonics, Spell to Write and  Read, and Sing, Spell, Read, and Write.

My Beliefs

  • K4/K5 education rooted in phonics is key.

  • The earlier a child learns to read, the earlier they are on their path to unlocking their true potential.

  • Reading is the most important academic skill your child will learn.

  • Students will need to read well to perform well in all other subjects; they need to read math directions and word problems; English, science, and history text books.

  • A better phonetic reader makes a better phonetic speller and better writer.

  • A confident reader is a more confident student overall.

  • Confident, proficient readers score higher on standardized testing

My Programs

  • I offer 4 programs that each begin with an evaluation for reading level

    1. Private Reading Lessons-30 minute lessons on site in Temple Terrace, FL-Once or Twice Weekly

    2. Private Video Lessons-30 minute online lessons via Zoom.- Once or Twice Weekly

    3. Video Lessons with Support-Access to view my instructional videos online and meet 15 minutes per week to check progress/answer questions.

    4. Kindergarten Prep Program-via week long on site summer camp, on-site weekly lessons, or video lessons (Offerings vary by year.)

  • I also offer a "Video Only" monthly subscription which allows you to view instructional videos and submit questions via email.

  • My 7th grade daughter who has watched me teach for years and assists my K4/K5 students in summers, offers "Big Sister" study sessions.

  • Her study sessions are online via zoom and are ideal for families having trouble studying the materials at home; wanting extra practice when a parent is not available; or those experiencing a sense of frustration with a topic or phase.

My Students

  • I am currently accepting children ages 4 to 10.

  • I accept students for their first time school experience,  and those currently enrolled in public, private, charter, and home school. programs.

  • I accept all ability levels but please chat with me first if your child has a severe learning disability so that we can set common, realistice expectations.

  • I do not consider high functioning autism, ADD, and ADHD as severe learning disabilities unless their behavior falls under the category of severe. (They will work on the normal program just adjusted to their needs.)

  • I do not accept children with severe behavior problems for on-site lessons as my classroom is small with many breakable expensive material sets.

  • I will attempt to accomodate behavior problems for online lessons provided that you understand their behavior will impact their instructional time if we have to stop for you to correct behavior issues.
