Short or Long? That is the question!

Did you know most words can be divided into 3 categories?

Those three are

1. Short vowel words - if, cat, duck, strong, scratch-notice that each of these words has only one vowel but they start at 1 consonant and go all the way to 5 consonant.

2. Long vowel words - air, make, spade, scrape, stream-these each have two vowels and range in consonants from 1 to 4.

3. Special Sound words: adopt-the "a" says its special sound "u" which is the short vowel sound "u." push-the 'u" says its special sound.

Consider the chart to the right which is good practice to test to see if your child is able to sound out the majority of word patterns.
